  1. Will I be able to view my manuscript as a whole?

I would really like to have a manuscript view where the whole novel can be seen as a whole and complete entity to get a feel for how it reads.

  2. I would like to be able to track submissions from within the software.

It would be nice to be able to track what story was sent to which agent/publisher, how long it has been out. Their response. payment, what kind of story did I send them.(short story, novel, memoir, what was the word count, genre? Agents contact info) I would love to make this my one stop writing shop and forget about loading down my computer with all the different software.

  3. the ability to color code my margin comments to help identify the story element I am referencing

It would be nice to see some kind of color code within my manuscript text to help reference what a particular margin comment is about. There could be different categories. The different story elements like character, setting, etc. And for editing changes, like "Need more research" etc. It's just an idea.

  6. Genre writing environment themes for inspiration

I love the way you have set this up to be a complete writing environment. Meaning all my writing is created and kept in this one environment, and I no longer will have to create separate document files for each writing project. As such I would love to be able to meld function with inspiration. Like desktop themes of old, I would love to be able to set different writing environment themes bases on the most popular genres, aka Mystery/Suspense, Romance, etc.

These themes would be complete with animated desktop, and soundtracks to use as white noise.(i love writing with…

  8. Tracking story elements

What I'm currently missing in all writing software I've ever tried is the possibility to track certain words or phrases and have them automatically tracked in the text. This is especially crucial for stories with a big cast, since it would be extremely helpful to be able to see with a single glance which characters are present in a given chapter.

In an ideal world I'd have the ability to have the text processor highlight all occurrences of a given name (or plot element or item, etc) and list them as tags somewhere at the side of the screen. Shaxpir…

I like the way you think, Siipis.

I’m planning on implementing this in a future version of Shaxpir. Once we get past the BETA period, and roll out some of the more essential features (like export & spellcheck), this is exactly the kind of thing Shaxpir is designed for.

  9. Flagging sentence parts - Adjectives in particular

This may be too difficult to accomplish, but would be tremendously useful and a major value add - to be able to flag all adjectives (or verbs, adverbs, etc) in a piece of text. My adjectives frequently need toning down in revision, and it would be amazing to have them highlighted.

  11. Outlining?

I like the look of the walkthrough and all the features like marginal notes. I don't see anything to help me outline.

(I'm a professional writer of tie-in novels, and outlining is critical to me. I'm happy to talk you through what's needed if you want)

  13. Chapter Heading Images

It would be nice if I could specify an image to go directly under the name of each chapter, before the text starts. something to alert myself, and any future potential readers that this is indeed a new chapter. This is somewhat related to the "inserting pictures into the body text of a chapter" thread, but I felt it was worth bringing up on its own.

  14. Principal Image Toggle

I really like the idea of having multiple images available in the Connections screen, but the principal image appears to be fixed. Suppose I have three characters in the scene/chapter I'm currently writing, and I'd like to feature in the large image pane each character as I write about them.

It'd be nice if I could mouse-over or right-click a different image to give it some prominence.

  15. Comments - Will they be checked/cleared prior to printing?

If I've posted reminder comments for myself such as "Rewrite this paragraph", or "check the published depth of nuclear submarines", and I happen to forget to clear those comments, or forget to perform the particular task, will I be warned that some comments are still pending when I go to print my document?

  16. Improvement - Edit: Find and Replace

In my last novel, I had misspelled the name of an Air Force Base....an actual historical Air Base. Fortunately, I discovered the issue, and was able to use "Find and Replace" to make sure that all occurances, of which there were many, were replaced.

    Will we have that capability?

  17. Improvement - Drag scenes to and from manuscript

I've created my story/book title. And, in my idle moments I came up with a bunch of scene ideas, which I dutifully typed in as new "scenes". Now, I'd like to position those "scenes" within the manuscript, or main story. The only way I can see to do that, is to retype the "scenes" as new "chapters" and then position them into my outline.

I would find it useful to take these random scenes that I created on the fly, and simply drag them into the manuscript, to be positioned in the proper outline.

Conversely, perhaps I've actually added the…

  18. Improvement - Add new "sub section" at the context (cursor position) level

I created my book title, and then created the first chapter. Then, I wanted to create a dozen, or so, "scenes". The goal was to arrange all of these into the outline format of Part 1 of the book.

What I discovered is that no matter where I placed my cursor....no matter what level I was at...any new "scene" was created at the story level, and then had to be dragged into its hierarchical position (outline position).

It would be helpful if I could highlight a level, and then insert new scenes as children of that level, rather than having…

  19. Improvement - Ability to resize workspace

Now that I've discovered the indenting of story elements, the need to be able to resize the workspace has become evident. Some scene titles are necessarily longer, and the more that indention takes place (to further refine the story), the more that they disappear under the document body writing space.

I would like to able to make my work space larger, so that I can see all levels (and titles) of my document, which will make my workflow faster.

I see no ability to attach a screenshot here, so I hope the explanation is good enough.

  20. Paperback formatting

I've long struggled with paperback formatting. Not a big revenue generator, but to be able to simply input my dimensions and headers, then have the bulk of the formatting done for me would be fantastic. Obviously things like widows & orphans and hyphenation would need to be done manually, but a correctly-sized .rtf file (or in-Shaxpir) file would be a great start.
